So this is an age-old tradition that dates waayyy back to before our great great grandparents :) Pickled fish This seems compulsory over Easter, the same way boud seems tradition on Eid. This is a recipe my grandmother passed on to my mother and she in turn passed it on to me :) Although this time round its been slightly altered.

The Ingelegde vis recipe usually calls for Yellow tail or Kabeljou  (My husband doesnt like either one so I use Snoek)

2kg cleaned and cut snoek.
light season the fish with salt and pepper, fry in deep oil for approx 5 min on each side.
When that is done, drain and set aside.

In a big pot add 4 sliced onions, 2 cups brown vinegar, 5ml salt, 10ml curry powder (eg Cartwrights? Rajah etc), 5ml borrie (tumeric), 5ml chilli powder and bay leaves
Bring to boil then add store-bought pickled fish mix – its usually under R10 a pkt. Then let it simmer on medium heat for 5-10min.

Add the onion mix to the fish and let it stand for 1 day before eating.

The fish must ‘swim’ in the onion/vinegar mixture. If its not then boil another cup of vinegar with 1 sliced onion and some sugar, then add this the mixture.

Served best with buttered baked bread :)

Happy Easter and Happy Cooking

P.S Dont forget to give us feedback on the recipe :)

Drive Safe and Enjoy the long weekend
